Turning 1!

20th September 2015 by Gemma Leave a Comment

Yesterday The White Emporium turned a whole whooping 1! I am not sure where this year has flown to but it has been a whirlwind of emails, weddings, styled shoots and endless tidying!

I love The White Emporium and everything it is growing into but it has consumed my life, my nearly every waking thought is about weddings. My spare time is spent cleaning, writing emails and pestering people, would I change it for the world…. No! I am sure my feelings are shared by everyone struggling to start their own business, especially those working 2 jobs. That is enough of the negatives, here are all the positives and there are lots!

This year I have been lucky enough to meet so many amazing and talented suppliers, some I have already worked with on shoots and more I plan to work with in the next year. They have taught me a lot and have offered so many pearls of wisdom.

Next are the lovely couples I get to work with, all the hard work is rewarded when you see their beaming smiles, that feeling of accomplishment will never get boring.

I have also learnt so many lessons, a lot through trial and error but with every wedding I do I feel The White Emporium improves along with the service we offer. I don’t think in this job I will ever stop learning and that is one of the best things about it.

Unexpected success… our little hand drawn maps have gone from strength to strength, they were never intended to be part of our range and I am so glad I was convinced to offer them as part of the range. I love drawing and in the past year my maps have travelled from London to Italy with many Bedford destinations in between.

So what will happen in the next year… watch out for The White Emporium gracing the pages of some of the UKS biggest blogs! This is so super exciting but I don’t want to spoil the shoot reveals to much, so watch this space! We will be adding into the collection with some more rustic and unique props from our hit list. Keep an eye on our website, this will be evolving and growing and I promise I will get better at a regular blog post!

Of all the things I have learnt, the most important is ‘there are just not enough hours in the day!’ But there never will be, there always be to much to do and far to little time, I have many more late nights ahead of me! I need to try and stop beating myself up about the things I don’t have time to do and realise all I can do is my best.

Finally thank you to my friends, family, likes and followers for all your love and support. Especially the hubby whose life and home The White Emporium also consumes. I could not have survived this first year without you all!

So here is to the next part of the adventure and turning 2!

Love Gemma

Dreamy Backdrops

13th August 2015 by Gemma Leave a Comment

It is with great embarrassment I am writing this opening sentence! Eeekkk we have not blogged in nearly 2 months! Where has that time gone? We have good reason… we have hit our first wedding season hard and so far it has been a success, although I massively underestimated how many hours running this little gem would take up! No complaints from me though 🙂

So today’s blog is all about dreamy back drops, I have been collecting a lot of images over the past few months and I just can’t get enough! These will be incorporated into a lot of the styling projects we are working on over the next couple of months. I am getting crafty and hopefully will be able to offer out some of the below ideas to brides to hire in a few months time.

A lot of the images have been grabbed of blogs and instagram so unfortunately I don’t have image credits for all of them but I wanted to share them all with you as they are just so beautiful.

Backdrops are so functional and look amazing at the end of an aisle, as a frame for the newlyweds or as the perfect photo background. Plus most of the are super cost effective and if you are a little crafty can be created by hand.

Here’s a little selection of inspiration from my back drop scrap book…

backdrop 3 IMG_4630 backdrop 1 back drop 2

I hope you found a little spark of inspiration from these images, backdrops and arbors are key trends for the next wedding season. The great thing is they can be made personalised just to you, by adding in your flowers and your own unique touch. My personal favourites are the fabric frames set in the woods, how dreamy to be married in your own little woodland wonderland. I am also head over heels for dream catchers at the moment, keep an eye on this blog for how we will be using these in an exciting shoot we are collaborating on.

Have a lovely weekend!

Coming Soon Table Runners…

15th May 2015 by Gemma Leave a Comment

We have a very long list of goodies that we are busy hunting and sourcing, but we also are busy creating hand made items that are available to rent and buy.
One such item that will hopefully be gracing The white Emporiums pages soon are table runners. Perfect for adding colour into rooms and enhancing table centres. The mood board below shows the look and vibe we are after. We are looking to create a relaxed atmosphere with a fresh bohemian feel. The muted tones sit perfectly with blues, pastels and corals. Mix with Mercury votives and simple glass bottles for a clean, effortless look.
For a real vintage look we are looking to use faded florals and grey ticking stripes. Our ultimate favourites are the broader Normandy and Padstow stripes.
Now it’s just a case of trying to source the perfect fabric and we can get sewing!
So keep your eye out on the website for the new additions. We already have a few ideas up our sleeve for how we can style them into some forthcoming photoshoots.

Have you thought about using table runners for your big day?

Bunting Love….

29th April 2015 by Gemma Leave a Comment

I am a dab hand with a sewing machine and bunting is one of my favourite things to make. It is such a versatile way to add colour and height into a room.

Weddings are getting more and more creative and the decoration more unique and colourful with every issue of Brides Magazine you pick up. So I thought I would share with you my top 5 favourite alternative bunting ideas.

In at number 5 – Lace  and crochet bunting (did I mention we stock lace bunting)

Watch the light fall beautifully through the dainty lace fabrics. Crochet doilies and the more traditional  lace triangle flags are a must have for summer weddings. Perfect for woodland blessings and old barns.

Closely following behind at number 4 is bunting made from pine cones and ribbon. Effortlessly rustic and simple, it is a great for those who love the idea of a DIY wedding. I love the idea of mixing this with rag bunting which you can never have enough of!

No 3 – Photo Bunting! This can be incorporated in so many ways. why not make garlands adorned with images of you growing up as a child surrounded by all your friends and family. Or use it as part of a guest book, hire a Polaroid camera and encourage guests to snap away and then add the Polaroid onto the bunting. It will serve as a great time line for how the night evolves.

BESPOKE BRIDE

No 2 is Big, Bright and beautiful flower garlands. String carnations ( a relatively in expensive flower) across your venue and watch the colours pop! Or string them vertically to create a sumptuous back drop.

And my all time Summer 2015 bunting idea is…. Lampshades! A key trend for SS15 is bringing the inside out, perfect for creating a unique area. I love how the image below shows them strung from trees, imagine a relaxed seating area below and you instantly have the most sought after wedding vibe!

We have some photo shoots coming up and hopefully we will try and include some of these beautiful ideas.

You can’t beat a bit of Wednesday hump day inspiration!

How to create glitter dipped feathers…

23rd January 2015 by Gemma Leave a Comment

Most of my regular followers will know I have a bit of a thing for glitter, I have been busy this week creating glitter dipped feathers for a little project I have been working on so thought I would share an easy tutorial with you. The dipped feathers can be used as backdrop, as details for your place settings or highlights in your flowers.

All you need is – A brush, PVA glue, a selection of feathers and a pot of glitter emptied into a bowl.

what you need

1 – Make sure the feathers are clean, then lightly brush the PVA glue over the tip of the feather.

glue

2 – Make sure there is not so much glue that it drips off the feather, you only need a very thin coating.  Dip the end of the feather into the bowl of glue. Shake off excess glitter.

glitter

3 – Place your feather somewhere to dry, it is essential the glue tip is not touching any surface. I used oasis to keep the feather upright and separate.

Why stop with glitter you can also use paint and sequins!

It’s so simple but very beautiful 🙂

What will you be using your dipped feathers for?

Wedding Traditions

11th December 2014 by Gemma Leave a Comment

I personally love the wedding ceremony, there is something very special about the pomp and circumstance, the sense of occasion and the formalities. For me it was the most important part of our wedding and I didn’t want it to end. There are many customs and traditions that we enjoy and we consider to be important, I have looked into a few especially those associated with a Church of England wedding.

The Ushers, should be the first people to arrive at the church or venue to ensure they know where everyone is to sit and everything is in place. Their main responsibilities are to welcome the guests and ensure everyone is sat in the right place with an order of service. The best man should stand at the front of the church with his groom to ensure he remains calm and focused.

found on confettidaydreams.com

found on confettidaydreams.com

Traditionally the brides friends and family sit on the left and grooms on the right. This mirrors how the bride and groom stand at the end of the aisle. A very long time ago the grooms right arm was considered his sword arm and he would sometimes be required to fight off attackers whilst holding his bride on his left side.

bride and bridesmaid

Found on bridalguide.com

It is customary for the brides mother to wait at the entrance of the church for the bride to arrive, to be ready for any last minute tears and hugs, she should be the last person before the bridal party to enter the church, this acts as a symbol to the groom that his bride has arrived. She should be walked to her seat at the front left hand side by an usher.

We exchange rings as a symbol of eternity with no beginning or end and it is thought this goes back thousands of years and may have originated in Egypt. Within the Christian Church it is believed that the ring is placed on the fourth finger as the vicar used to touch the fingers whilst proclaiming the words ‘In the name of the Father (touching the thumb), the Son (second finger) and the Holy Spirit (middle finger) Amen’ by which time he is at the ring finger.

There is no religious requirement for a bride to wear a veil, but traditionally worn as a symbol of purity and modesty. After the minister declares the Bride and Groom husband and wife it is customary for the Brides Father to lift the veil to reveal the brides face to her husband, this symbolizes that it is now o.k for the couple to enter into a sexual relationship.

I hope you have enjoyed a little peek into some of the many traditions involved within the wedding ceremony.

Simply effortless flowers

7th November 2014 by Gemma Leave a Comment

Deciding on flowers can be a daunting task, especially when florists start talking about plants you have never heard of and then the question of price comes in. The most important thing is to relax, your vision can be achieved it may just mean a little bit of compromise. I thought I would share with you a few simply styled relaxed flower displays, these are stems cut from my green thumbed mums garden and are so effortless they are beautiful. Displayed in mini glass jugs and decorated bottles it doesn’t take a lot to add a bright pop of colour. Arrange colourful flowers against a green backdrop in rustic wooden boxes to create perfect top table displays.
For your ceremony use tall props that allow you to create displays with volume. This will help mark create impact and mark the entrance to you aisle. After all this is the most important part of the day!
All items are available to hire from the White Emporium.

Take one ladder…

31st October 2014 by Gemma Leave a Comment

We love ladders at The White Emporium, they are so versatile and make a great focal point. We get asked a lot about how to style up our items and we understand that sometimes it is hard to see past the fact it is to some just a wooden ladder. So to help you out and inspire you on this unusually hot Halloween we have found some of our favourite images to show that there (in the words of Marks and Spencer) ‘Not just a step ladder.’ If you love what you see and want to add a step ladder into your wedding, good news! We have wooden step ladders to hire, in various shapes and sizes.

Create a cake table with a difference, this is perfect if you are having cupcakes and need a lot of room to display them.

Welcome drinks are often the first insight your guests will have into your venue, make sure you leave a good impression with an alternative welcome drinks display.

Use your step ladder as a shelf to create layers of detail and add interest to your venue, great for displaying flowers, candles and photos. This is a perfect tool for use in barns and marques where you basically have a blank canvas to decorate.

Finally and one of the easiest to create ideas that’s very practical but looks beautiful is using a ladder as table plan. Stack with plant pots, hang gift tags from string wrapped around the steps or stand decorative photo frames. The possibilities are endless.

Autumn Wandering

The changing seasons are my favourite time of year, I love Autumn for the changing leaves, crisp nights and change in wardrobe. So last Sunday I headed off with a box load of props and my trusty flower arranger (my mum) and armed only with my iPhone set about trying to capture The White Emporiums wares against an Autumn backdrop. imageimage imageimage IMG_1453IMG_1481 IMG_1475

I’ve changed today’s post I was going to share because the snow today has instilled a sense of calm in me and I wanted to reflect that in my grid.

I love the snow, it came at just the right time breaking up the monotony of our lives. We have laughed and smiled today so much!

To me this shoot is calmness, I look at it and I am immensely proud of all we achieved. It symbolises the first touches of spring creeping into a grey world and that’s just what i feel today. Although it’s cold I always seem to associate the snow as the catalyst for the change into the spring. The colour will start creeping back in soon and this year I feel it’s needed more than ever!

The wedding industry has been shut in all but name since the first lockdown in March. Many businesses lost nearly all of their projected 2020 turnover, many couples now face uncertainty knowing if their dream days will be able to go ahead or not.

The wedding industry is full of creatives, entrepreneurs, hard workers and go getters but the past 10 months has taken its toll. We understand the safety of everyone is paramount and as an industry we have done as we have been told.

What we need now is financial support to get this unique and beloved industry through these times, to get us to the days when we all want to celebrate again. We need rapid testing to be rolled out to allow large scale weddings and events to reopen.

Now is the time to keep fighting for our businesses and for our couples so when this is all over we can all celebrate love and friendship together again as it’s meant to be!

We need a drink! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One d We need a drink!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One day this will all be over. I wonder if Bojo will do an announcement saying we can all hug now? Releasing party poppers as he does Sambuca shots of his desk? Now that would be a Press Conference I would love to watch!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We don't know much right now but what we do know is that at some point in time their are going to be some insane parties!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So with all the doom and gloom what is better than spending your days planning that party or at least day dreaming about it!

Big girl pants on! Let’s face it tonight’s an Big girl pants on!

Let’s face it tonight’s announcement isn’t going to be what we want it to be. Back In March we probably never would have thought we would be where we are tonight. But there is absolutely nothing we can do about it, we can’t control it all we can do is handle how we react.

I know people are struggling financially and mentally. Plans keep getting cancelled and re- made, our day to day life is constantly changing but we have totally got this! Dig deep and you will find the strength to get through this!

My inbox is always open!

I love the attitude and strength of this shoot!

2020 a year in review! A year of to many tears, t 2020 a year in review!

A year of to many tears, to many packets of hobnobs and not enough weddings. But also a year full of support, laughter and working out what is important in life.

Of fighting everyday to get your voice heard so Excluded businesses and the impact of missed weddings get to have their say in parliament.

To the best, most understanding couples who have helped get this business through the year. I know life has been shit for you, but we can get to your day together. To the local businesses and local community who have supported me when I am down, bought products from me and who keep me going.

Christmas Haze! I hope everyone else is enjoying Christmas Haze!

I hope everyone else is enjoying the post Christmas / Pre- New Year haze? Tier 4 here means there is literally no where to go and no one to see. So it’s quiet days filled with lazy mornings and afternoon walks.

Trying to hold onto these days and not get to caught up in the promise of the new year / new start momentum. Things will get better but need to keep reminding myself it’s not going to happen as the clocks strike midnight!

Happy Christmas! This is me signing out for the n Happy Christmas!

This is me signing out for the next few days. Wishing you all a happy Christmas for what must be the strangest of festive holidays we have ever faced. May you find happiness and comfort in these quieter days.

I have picked this photo by @nickisheaphotography from N&Js wedding back in September, the only fully styled wedding I managed to work on. I feel it perfectly sums up 2020, the masks in the background a constant reminder of Covid. But do you know what love does conquer all and this couple prove it! As a team you can overcome anything! Love really is everywhere, family, friends, partners, pets. strength and support is there. My heart has broken for others and myself so much this year. When all you want is to hug someone who is hurting and you can’t is something I will never forget.

However you have made it this far and you can make it to the other side. This isn’t forever.

You will get married, you will hold each other and one day this will all be behind us.

So signing out for Christmas with some hope because sometimes that’s all we have. But that’s enough!

Have a lovely few days!

That’s a wrap- The last of the dried flower com That’s a wrap-

The last of the dried flower commissions left for their new homes today.

I have loved the dried flower journey I have been on over the past few months. A huge thanks to everyone who has supported this little business by buying and shouting about my little projects. You really have kept the wheels turning, the bills paid and shoes on Devons feet.

I am hoping to bring bouquets back for Mother’s Day but for now that’s a wrap! I’m looking forward to getting stuck into a new project in 2021.

Quiet- Apologies I have been a little quiet on he Quiet-

Apologies I have been a little quiet on here over the past few days. If I’m honest the latest announcements and finding myself and my whole family in tier 4 has been a little overwhelming.

To me Christmas is everything, it’s my favourite time of year, I love everything about it and adapting to the new rules has been a little tough to get my head around.

I don’t want to wish time away but I can’t wait for this to all be over and to be able to hug everyone I love and celebrate all the events we have missed this year together.

Sending you huge hugs to everyone else who feels their world has been a little flipped upside down again.
